Mosquito Information
As the weather warms up, it’s important to stay informed about mosquito activity and the risks of mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). These viruses are found in our environment and can cause serious illness in people, horses, and other animals.
- You can find local risk levels for EEE and WNV based on seasonal testing at Massachusetts arbovirus update | Mass.gov
- Know your risk. Check the above mass.gov webpage regularly. Hover over Concord on each map to see the current risk level and recommendations based on that risk level.
The Town of Concord works with the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project (EMMCP) to help reduce mosquito populations and keep our community safe. Their work includes:
Adult mosquito surveillance
Treating around 2,400 catch basins with a biological agent (Vectolex WSP) to control larvae
Applying a natural treatment (Bti) to wetlands to stop mosquito larvae before they become adults
EMMCP focuses on prevention through monitoring, treating problem areas, and keeping drainage systems clear. Concord does not use aerial spraying for mosquito control.
Throughout the summer, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health keeps a close eye on mosquito activity and updates the WNV and EEE risk levels for Concord and surrounding towns.
